Erin and Ty

El Cortez, Don Room
October 22, 2005
“During our first semester at California State University, Chico, we met at a Christmas party,” Erin explains. “I was very homesick, and desperately wanted to move back to San Diego, but that changed when I met Ty. He felt like home. I felt comfortable just being myself around him. I noticed how easy it was to talk to him, and how much he made me laugh.”
They both knew right away that they were serious about each other. Coming from southern California, they had much in common. “We did everything together — we quickly became inseparable.”
Ty proposed at sunset on a cruise to the Mexican Riviera with two of their best friends. Erin laughs, “After I said yes, about thirty dolphins jumped out of the water and swam next to the ship!”
“We chose El Cortez after visiting nearly every wedding venue in San Diego,” Erin says. “El Cortez was the last place we visited and we fell in love with it.” Coincidentally, Erin’s parents had attended their prom there in 1967.
Ty describes the Don Room as having “the most beautiful atmosphere I’ve ever seen at a wedding — candlelit, romantic, peaceful. And the bride was gorgeous.” Abundant red and pink roses set the color theme for the event.
The music was carefully chosen, all of it with acoustic guitar. As a special nod to Erin’s maternal grandfather, who passed away when Erin was very young, “Ave Maria” was played as the bridesmaids walked down the aisle. The bride entered to “Cannon D,” and after the ceremony, “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles was played as the couple left.
Wearing a custom dress by Somsi House of Design, the bride carried a bouquet of red and pink roses with white calla lilies wrapped with pink ribbon, along with her mother’s silver rosary. The bridesmaids wore black cocktail dresses and had similar pink and red roses bouquets. Single red rose boutonnières provided spots of color against the groom’s and attendants’ Calvin Klein tuxes.
“We said traditional vows. It felt special to know that we were making promises that had been made for hundreds of years before us. It was the fruition of all of the years of dreaming and saying to each other, ‘One day, when we’re married…’ I felt overwhelmed with love for him, and realized that we had just passed a major milestone in life. I was excited to be starting our lives together.”
Right before the ceremony, a close friend surprised Erin with her mother’s wedding ring to wear as “something borrowed.” The friend’s mother had been a significant part of Erin’s early life. Readings were given from a Bible that had belonged to Erin’s maternal grandfather.
The reception room was beautiful, reflecting the color scheme of red and pink. “We had a ‘memory table’ that showed parents and grandparents and other family members on their wedding days or at other significant moments in their lives,” Erin says. “And instead of having a traditional guest book, guests had their pictures taken with a Polaroid camera, and then signed next to their photos.”
After a sumptuous gourmet dinner and chocolate cake, the revelries began. “We danced all night!” Ty says. “Erin’s dad cut in on our first dance. He later explained that it was symbolic of the first and last time that he would ever come between us. It was a great party — lots of hugs, kisses, smiles, and laughter.”
“Our vendors were simply amazing — all of them! — Paul Bott Catering(florist and linens), Roxi Link and Suzanne Link-Smith (coordinators), Kelly Blum (make-up), Britney Hailey (hair), Ed Bia (DJ), John and Kristina Alexanders (photography), Maya Hill (guitar), and Father Joe (officiant).”
“Now we are partners in life, about to watch each other get gray and wrinkly. We plan to move to different places, have lots of kids, travel, share our ups and downs, fight hard, but love harder,” Erin says. “We’re there for the long haul — for the journey, not the destination.”
“We spent a week in Kauai and a week in Maui on our honeymoon, so relaxing after the wedding.”
